What is the role of sex therapy in healing intimacy issues after sexual trauma?
If a client is ready to talk to a licensed professional about how past traumas are affecting current day relationships, even with self, then this is the beginning of healing.
And what does it mean to heal?
Healing means living in the moment, without the ghosts of past exploitation and pain manipulating outcomes or experiences.
What is the role of sex therapy?
Sex therapy provides a space to talk about the defeating thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that can work behind the scenes to keep others at a distance.
There is no emotional intimacy without vulnerability and therapy provides a safe container for this dialogue to occur.
How do I get started?
Sometimes, a couple makes the first appointment to be seen together, and then it is revealed that one of the people (sometimes both) has trauma from the past that needs to see the light of day, to process and heal from. Then the recommendation is for that person to do their own individual work before the couple's issues can be looked at. Sometimes both can be done concurrently. If this is the case, grace and patience will be needed from all as the unwinding occurs.
